Artist's Description
The tombstone/memorial of Col. Jonathan Buck in Bucksport, Maine - legend has it that in the late 1700's, Col. Buck condemned a woman to death for practicing witchcraft. Before she was hung and proclaiming her innocence, she told Buck that after his death, her feet would appear on his tombstone to show the world that he murdered an innocent woman. If you look at the tombstone, you will see what looks like the outline of a foot and leg. Attempts have been made to remove the image, but it has always returned. Over the years, people knowledgeable about monuments have explained that the image
is the result of a natural flaw in the stone, perhaps a vein of iron which darkens through contact with oxygen.
